Chris Flegg - Through The Window Chris Flegg - Through The Window

Well here it is, my 2006 album following on from the 2005 album My Sweet Lady and there are 15 original songs and one new instrumental tune crammed into one CD to give over one hour of music. As before, the setting of the songs is deliberately simple to give the feel of live performances, but as this is such a long album, I have allowed myself a little more leeway in overdubbing.

My soprano sax playing adds colour to tracks 4, 10 and 14 and my tenor sax appears for the first time on track 6.

Chris has worked with the likes of George Papavgeris at the Windward folk club, so have a listen to the samples and see for yourself. You wont be dissapointed!

Peter Brodie - The Music of Peter Brodie

Peter Brodie is an exponent of gentle folk who sings his own songs, some tinged with sadness, some with humour. Both the style of song and the singing are reminiscent of Tom Paxton. Indeed, Warner Brothers Records said of Brodie in 1971, 'he sounds like Tom Paxton but as we have one Tom Paxton under contract, we don't need another'.

His voice is one of those rarities, possessing as it does an impressive range, from the tenor voice on 'Summer Breeze', which pleads with you to follow him away from it all on a sailing boat, to the deep bass on the pastiche country and western track 'Hit the Road.

Ex-Wise Heads - No Grey Matter Ex-Wise Heads - No Grey Matter

Reissue of the first Ex-Wise Heads CD "No Grey Matter".

Originally released in 2000, No Grey Matter

features seven strong slices of global influenced improvisation. Strong performances from the usual suspects Geoff Leigh on flutes, soprano sax, electronics and zither, Colin Edwin on fretless bass and guimbri and Vincent Salzfaas on bougarabous and percussion.

The opening bass riff of "Lost Tango" sets the pace with it's insistent rhythmic drive, broken only by the humourous twist at the end of the piece. The mood picks up with following track, aptly titled "Afro Hoe Down", which garnered significant airplay on BBC Radio Three's Late Junction.

Other highlights include the moody and atmospheric soundscape of "Spirit Dance" and the intense trance of 'Song for Jalil". "No Grey Matter" has a spontaneous feel throughout and manges to both satisfy and, paradoxically, leave the listener wanting more.

A good primer for the more developed sound and compositions that came with the follow up album "Time and Emotion Study"

Ex-Wise Heads - Time And Emotion Study

A colourful and expressive album featuring a trio of (Ex-Henry Cow) Geoff Leigh- Flutes and saxes, Vincent Salzfaas on afro-percussion and bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine tree).

With the help of guest violinist Peter Knight (Steeleye Span) the Ex-Wise Heads explore folk and world flavoured jazz roots in a variety of contexts and moods, with a diverse collection of instrumentation. This unexpectedly accessible, spontaneous and refreshing brew has been described by one reviewer as "Cafe folk with a Kashah feel" and "..as an antidote to blandness"

Steve Hughes - The Love You Shared Steve Hughes - The Love You Shared
The Love You Shared is a full album of thirteen tracks spanning the course of Steve's songwriting career from 1992 to the present day. Many of the old favourites feature of course, but newer pieces such as the stunning 'sunrise' g-tuned slide guitar instrumental sit happily alongside. As usual with Steve's work, he's not been afraid to take a couple of risks, and so if it works, it's on there - even if it's not quite the 'done thing'.

Aidan Jolly - System Fault

System Fault is Aidan's first solo CD. It was recorded over the last few years, and features guest appearances from some of Manchester's finest musicians including Jaydev Mistry (percussion), Bernie Murphy (vocals) and Jilah Bakhshayesh (violin).

Produced by Dave Connally (currently signed to Phuture Lounge with LTA), who also acted as sample supremo and played keyboards, the CD is a blend of styles from alt.folk to urban grooves via punk. With finely honed lyrics that fall into the songwriting tradition somewhere between Ian Dury and Ian Curtis (or was that Bonnie Prince Billy and Billy Bragg?), the subjects of the songs range from tender, off-beat love songs to cutting, comic, political satire.

James Krueger - Fine James Krueger - Fine

James Krueger has been called a true voice of the mountains. Finding inspiration in his native north eastern United States and performing what he calls "new folk with roots" (guitar, mandolin, accordion, etc.), Krueger "brings heartfelt appreciation to songs that celebrate the passing of the seasons and the sound of rain on a windowsill. But here are songs that probe beneath the surface of seemingly simple topics." (Rambles Magazine)

A Review in the Chronogram, a US periodical, said "For the same reason we live in the [Catskill Mountains], this CD is something you'll put on and won't take off. The music and lyrics on Fine reflect a deep, healthy connection with nature."

Another review in Rambles, an on-line cultural arts magazine, said that "Fine is a wonderful blend of Krueger's delicate voice and a dazzling array of instruments. The album is smooth and rich like coffee with cream. If you want a solid musical performance that perfectly blends instruments with vocals, Fine will certainly suffice."

George Papavgeris - Life As Usual George Papavgeris - Life As Usual

"George's 4th CD of self-penned material is a winner and should be the one to break him into the national consciousness...Twelve new songs, between them running the gamut of emotion and experience that makes up 'life as usual'...The real thing in terms of songwriting, with bags of integrity and compassion, stylish lyrics set to strong melodic hooks with unbelievably catchy choruses. A perfect calling-card for George's talents." - David Kidman

George Papavgeris - Countryside Like This

George's first CD made an impact as soon as it was released: Seven of the tracks were taken up by other singers in the first six months, in the UK, Australia and New Zealand; "As long" has replaced the "birthday song" in an Indiana venue; and "Emptyhanded" should feature soon in 2 cover versions by major artists - but remember where you heard it first!

George Papavgeris - Perfect Moments George Papavgeris - Perfect Moments

Going from strength to strength, George's 2nd album focuses on people and relationships, hopes, strengths and frailties. "Sound the horn" immediately became George's personal anthem. "Heart of a sailor boy" opened the maritime session at the Bedworth 2002 festival, with Johnny Collins' unaccompanied version, and along with several other tracks has been taken up by other artists in the UK, US and Canada. Characterised as "the best of thinking person's folk" - though George himself would have preferred "feeling person's"...

- Silent Majority

George's third CD marks 2 years of songwqriting and contains some of his best material yet: "Lowestoft Rock" was aired on BBC and together with "Flowers" and "Bogeyman" has been taken up by other singers even before the album was released; and "Circles" won the second prize at the biennial Maidenhead Songwriting Competition. As the album title indicates, the common thread is ordinary people and their struggles - "everyone a hero".

Mark T. - Where Have You Been? Mark T. - Where Have You Been?

Where Are You Going? is a lyrical set of original songs + four traditional songs from Mark T.

Many of you will remember Mark as leader of The Brickbats an esoteric roots band from the eighties and early ninetees who released three influential albums of global music to critical acclaim in the arts and roots press.

With this collection Mark returns closer to home will a linked collection of songs which constantly move backwards and forwards in time between his teens in 1970's Hereford to today.

The folk, blues and world music influences are still there but have been woven into a seamless contemporary sound which defies easy classification but takes you to worlds you may have forgotten existed.
